Businesses across the Bowthorpe and Costessey neighbourhood have joined forces to fight against crime. Following a number of thefts in the vicinity, premises have tightened up their security as a direct effect from the crime prevention advice given by the police. The team of businesses will be using SIRCS (Secure Incident Reporting and Community Engagement System) as a database to collate and share information about offenders. This will be the first Business Watch scheme to use SIRCS. Gary Pettengell, founder of Empowering-Communities said: “We are very pleased to be able to work with businesses in Bowthorpe and Costessey and administer the scheme for them. The use of our SIRCS crime management system will mean the businesses and partner agencies will be able to share and access crime information 24/7.” Premises who have agreed to take part in the scheme include: Wendene Shopping Centre, Longwater Retail Park and Barnard Road Industrial Estate. Business Watch will also be rolled out to other industries such as entertainment venues and taxi firms.

Police and partners have created a big impact this year during their annual Operation Dampened Spirits initiative. The operation to deter anti-social behaviour and associated crime has driven down reported incidents even further. Last year there were two reported incidents of Halloween related anti-social behaviour on Hallows Eve compared to this year where there were no calls in the Thetford neighbourhood. The partners worked hard to make residents feel safe by distributing Do Not Disturb posters to people who did not want to take part in Halloween, retailers restricted the sale of eggs and flour to young people and the Neighbourhood Policing Team conducted extra high visibility patrols.
